In this medieval tale, King Arthur is challenged by the Grey Knight to a ʻbattle of witsʼ for the crown of England, in the form of a riddle: ʻWhat do all women want more than anything in the world.' He meets an extremely ugly, very old and decrepit woman who provides him with the correct answer (sovereignty), on the condition that she be allowed to marry one of the kingʼs young knights. Sir Gawain gallantly volunteers, and in so doing breaks half of a curse, which enables her to be young and beautiful half of the time. To break the other half of the curse, Sir Gawain must answer this question correctly: Should she be beautiful in the day, when she is among the townspeople, or at night when she is home with Sir Gawain? He gives her the correct answer: It is her choice. The curse is lifted, and the rest, as they say ... is history.
